Loose Brickwork Repairs
Loose or moving brickwork can occur for several reasons, including deteriorated mortar, weather exposure, moisture, building movement or failed wall ties. The right repair starts with understanding why the bricks have become loose and how much of the wall has been affected.
For isolated loose bricks or deteriorated mortar joints, the repair may be relatively straightforward. Damaged mortar can be removed and repointed, and individual bricks can be reset or replaced where required.
Where sections of brickwork are pulling away or have lost their connection to the structure, HeliTie remedial wall ties may be installed to secure and restrain the existing masonry with minimal disturbance to the wall.
If the loose brickwork is also cracked or affected by movement, HeliBar stainless-steel reinforcing bars may be installed within the mortar joints using specialist grout. The HeliBar and grout work together to reconnect and reinforce the affected masonry, helping distribute loads across the repaired area without unnecessarily rebuilding the wall.
Why Should I Repair Loose Brickwork?
Loose bricks and deteriorated mortar can worsen over time as the wall is exposed to weather, moisture and further movement. Open or weakened joints may also allow water to enter the wall and cause additional deterioration.
Repairing the problem early may involve only localised repointing, resetting loose bricks or replacing damaged bricks. If larger sections of brickwork are moving, separating or bulging, further reinforcement may be required to stabilise the wall and prevent the problem from progressing.
If foundation movement is contributing to the damage, underpinning may be recommended to re-support and stabilise the footings. This may involve another qualified contractor for resin injection underpinning or traditional underpinning using excavation and concrete beneath the existing footings.
Underpinning addresses movement at foundation level, but it does not necessarily repair the loose or damaged brickwork above. Where required, our propping, HeliBar crack stitching and HeliTie remedial wall-tie systems can work alongside underpinning to reconnect, reinforce and stabilise the affected masonry, providing a more complete remedial solution.
Loose Brickwork Repair Options
Weak or missing mortar is removed and replaced to restore support around the bricks.
Loose or damaged bricks may be reset or replaced where required.
HeliBars installed along the crack where masonry reinforcement is required
Remedial wall ties may be installed where the brickwork has become inadequately restrained or is separating from the supporting structure.
