Leaning Brickwork Repairs
Leaning or bowed brickwork does not have one standard repair. The appropriate method depends on the wall construction, the direction and extent of movement, and whether the problem is being caused by the foundations, failed connections or deterioration within the masonry.
Where an outer section of brickwork has lost its connection to the supporting wall or frame, HeliTie or another suitable remedial wall-tie system may be installed through the masonry and into the structure behind it. These ties provide additional restraint while allowing much of the existing brickwork to remain in place.
Where the wall is also cracked or requires reinforcement across the affected area, HeliBar stainless-steel reinforcing bars may be installed into the mortar joints with specialist grout. The HeliBars reconnect and reinforce the masonry while helping distribute loads beyond the damaged section.
Temporary propping may be used to support the wall while repairs are completed. Depending on the condition and position of the brickwork, sections may also require repointing, resetting or localised rebuilding.
If foundation movement is contributing to the lean, the footings may need to be re-supported or stabilised by a qualified contractor. Underpinning addresses the support below the building, while Calcon’s propping, HeliBar and remedial wall-tie work repairs and stabilises the affected masonry above.
Where a wall is extensively deteriorated, unstable or too far out of alignment to retain safely, partial or complete rebuilding may be the appropriate repair.
Why should I repair the leaning wall?
Leaning or bowed brickwork can continue to move if the cause is not addressed. As movement progresses, mortar joints may open, cracks may widen and sections of masonry can become increasingly loose or unstable.
Gaps and opened joints may also allow water to enter the wall and contribute to further deterioration. In more advanced cases, leaning brickwork can present a safety risk to people and surrounding property.
Addressing the problem early may allow more of the existing wall to be retained and reduce the extent of rebuilding required.
