Specialist Remedial Building and Masonry Repairs

Calcon Building Solutions is a Melbourne-based remedial building company specialising in the repair and reinforcement of existing homes and buildings.

We work on cracked masonry, loose or leaning brickwork, damaged plaster and rising damp. Our focus is on understanding what has caused the visible damage before determining how it should be repaired.

Our aim is to retain and reinforce the existing building wherever practical. However, the condition of the building may mean that part or all of a wall needs to be rebuilt. Where engineering or a building permit is required, Calcon can work as part of the project alongside the engineer, building surveyor and other relevant contractors.

Our Approach

Not every crack, loose brick or damp patch has the same cause. Some problems may be limited to the finished surface, while others can be associated with movement, deteriorated mortar, failed wall ties, moisture or changes within the building.

We begin by inspecting the affected area and considering the conditions that may be contributing to the problem. This allows us to prepare a clear scope of work that addresses the damaged materials and, where it falls within our services, the underlying cause.

Our repair methods can include HeliBar crack stitching, HeliTie remedial wall ties, temporary propping, brick replacement, repointing, plaster repairs and chemical damp-proof course installation.

Why should I repair the crack?

Not every crack is structural, and sometimes filler and paint may be all that's needed. In other cases, cracking can indicate something more – such as ground movement, water ingress, tree roots, drainage, or an issue within the building itself.

If foundation movement is contributing to the problem, underpinning may be recommended to re-support and stabilise the footings. This may involve another qualified contractor specialising in resin injection underpinning – a modern and less invasive method, or traditional underpinning, which involves excavation and concrete works beneath the existing footings.

Underpinning addresses the support at foundation level, but it doesn't necessarily repair the damage caused to the walls above. Our Propping, HeliBar crack stitching and HeliTie remedial wall tie systems can work alongside underpinning to reconnect, reinforce and stabilise affected masonry — enhancing the results of underpinning alone and providing a more complete remedial solution.

Specialist Repair Methods

Experience You Can Rely On

Calcon Building Solutions has provided specialist remedial repairs for more than 10 years, supported by over 25 years of building and trade experience.

As a Registered Builder, we bring practical building knowledge to each project and provide clear information about the proposed work, its inclusions and any related issues that may need to be addressed separately.

Where foundation movement is contributing to the damage, resin injection or traditional underpinning may need to be undertaken by a suitably qualified contractor. Calcon can work alongside the underpinning contractor, using propping, HeliBar and HeliTie repair methods to reconnect and reinforce the affected masonry above and complement the foundation stabilisation works.
