Loose Brickwork
Loose or moving brickwork can be more than just a maintenance issue. Deteriorated mortar, failed or inadequate wall ties, moisture and building movement can all cause bricks or sections of masonry to become loose, unstable or begin separating from the structure.
We look beyond the visible damage to understand what is causing the movement before recommending the appropriate repair.
Why are my bricks loose or moving?
Loose bricks can occur for a number of reasons. The pattern and extent of movement can help indicate whether the problem is limited to the mortar or involves a larger section of the wall.
If sections of brickwork are separating, bulging or moving away from the building, the wall ties that connect the masonry back to the structure may have deteriorated, failed or may no longer be providing adequate restraint.
Individual bricks can loosen as mortar deteriorates with age, weathering or moisture exposure. In other cases, movement within the building can place additional stress on the masonry and surrounding joints.
Mortar joints can break down over time through weather exposure, moisture and movement. Once the mortar deteriorates, bricks may begin to loosen and the wall can become increasingly vulnerable to further movement.
Wall-tie or support issues can allow sections of masonry to move independently if connections have deteriorated or are inadequate.

How We Fix Loose Brickwork
The right repair depends on why the brickwork has become loose. Where the masonry has lost its connection to the structure, HeliTie remedial wall ties can be installed to secure and restrain the existing brickwork with minimal disturbance to the wall.
Where cracking or movement within the masonry also requires reinforcement, HeliBar stainless-steel helical bars may be installed into the mortar joints with specialist grout to reconnect and strengthen the affected area.
For isolated loose bricks or deteriorated mortar, repairs may also include replacing damaged bricks and repointing the surrounding masonry.
The aim is to repair and stabilise the existing brickwork wherever practical, rather than unnecessarily removing and rebuilding larger sections of the wall.
