Problems We Solve
Cracked and Damaged Plaster
Cracked, bubbling or deteriorating plaster isn't always just a surface issue. It can be associated with building movement, moisture or deterioration behind the plaster.
The important part is working out why the plaster has cracked before repairing it. If the plaster itself has failed, the repair may be straightforward. If the wall behind it has moved, become damp or deteriorated, that underlying issue should be addressed first.
What can cause plaster cracks and damage?
Fine hairline surface cracks can develop as building materials age and respond to minor settlement or temperature changes. Areas around doors, windows, corners and wall junctions are common locations because different building elements meet at these points.
The pattern and behaviour of a crack can provide important clues. Diagonal or widening cracks, cracks extending from openings, or damage that returns after an earlier repair may indicate continued movement within the masonry or supporting foundations.
Bubbling, lifting or separating plaster, together with staining or visible tide marks, can indicate moisture from rising damp, water ingress or plumbing leaks. Any source of moisture should be identified before the damaged surface is reinstated.
Plaster may also become soft or crumbly through age, prolonged moisture exposure or salt contamination. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, it is important to understand what is happening behind the finished surface before deciding on the repair.

How We Fix Cracked and Damaged Plaster
Our first step is to determine whether the plaster damage has an underlying cause. If the masonry behind the plaster is cracked or has moved, it may need to be reinforced with stainless-steel bars before any surface-level plaster repairs begin. The bars or ties are concealed within the masonry behind the finished plaster surface as detailed in our Plaster Crack Solutions page. The plaster layer is left sealed and sanded, ready for painting.
