Cracked Plaster and Damage Repair
Cracked or damaged plaster can sometimes be limited to the surface, but it may also be a visible sign of movement or deterioration within the masonry behind it. The right repair begins with identifying the cause before restoring the finished surface.
Where cracking extends into the masonry and follows the mortar joints, sections of plaster may be removed to access the wall behind. HeliBar stainless-steel reinforcing bars are then installed into the mortar joints with specialist grout to reconnect and reinforce the cracked masonry. Once the underlying wall has been repaired, the plaster is reinstated, filled, sealed and sanded in preparation for painting.
Where plaster is bubbling, soft or separating because of moisture, the source of the moisture should be addressed before the damaged plaster is replaced.
For minor surface-level hairline cracks where the wall behind remains sound, a localised plaster repair may be all that is required.
Why Should I Repair Cracked or Damaged Plaster?
Filling and painting a crack may improve its appearance temporarily, but the crack can reopen if movement within the wall has not been addressed. Repairing the underlying masonry first helps provide a more stable base for the new plaster finish.
If foundation movement is contributing to the cracking, underpinning by a qualified contractor may be required to re-support and stabilise the footings. Underpinning addresses movement at foundation level, while HeliBar crack stitching and other remedial work can repair and reinforce the affected masonry above before the plaster is reinstated.
Damaged plaster caused by moisture should also be investigated before repairs begin. Without addressing rising damp, water ingress or a leak, bubbling, staining or deterioration may return through the new finish.
Cracked Plaster Repair Method
These Calcon projects show the stages involved in repairing cracked masonry behind an internal plaster finish. Once the HeliBar reinforcement is installed, the channels and damaged areas are filled, sealed and sanded to leave the wall ready for painting.
Damaged plaster is removed to expose the cracked masonry and allow the underlying wall to be repaired.
Horizontal channels are formed across the cracks, extending into sound masonry on both sides.
Stainless-steel HeliBars are installed with specialist grout to reconnect and reinforce the cracked wall.
