Rising Damp and Salt Attack Repairs

Our first step is to investigate where the moisture is coming from and identify any conditions contributing to the problem. This may include checking the existing damp-proof course, surrounding drainage, external ground levels, plumbing leaks and areas where water may be entering the building.

Where rising damp is confirmed, a new chemical damp-proof course may be installed. Small holes are drilled at selected intervals near the base of the wall, and a specialist damp-proofing product is introduced into the masonry to create a new barrier against moisture rising from the ground.

The appropriate installation method depends on the wall construction, its condition and the materials involved.

Once the moisture source has been addressed, the wall needs time to dry. Salt-affected or deteriorated materials may also require repair. Depending on the extent of the damage, this can include removing weakened mortar, repointing the brickwork, replacing badly damaged bricks, removing contaminated plaster or render, and reinstating the finished surface with suitable materials.

Where salt damage has been caused by another moisture source—such as poor drainage, water ingress or a plumbing leak—that source should be corrected before the affected masonry and finishes are repaired.

Rising Damp Repair Method

Why should I repair Rising Damp?

Rising damp can continue to affect bricks, mortar, plaster and painted finishes if the moisture source is not addressed. Repainting, replastering or cleaning away salt deposits may improve the appearance temporarily, but the damage can return while moisture continues to move through the wall.

Over time, repeated wetting and drying can cause mortar to soften, bricks to flake or crumble and plaster to bubble or separate from the wall. Salts left within the masonry can also continue to affect new finishes if they are not considered as part of the repair.

Treating the problem early can help limit further deterioration and reduce the amount of masonry, plaster or finishing work required.
